Up Style provides professional freelance copyediting services, specializing in business, technology, historical fiction and memoir. We offer heavy, medium or light copyediting services virtually, or in-person anywhere from Hamilton to Toronto. We are here to elevate your written content to the next level!
Hiring a copyeditor ensures choice and flexibility. They won’t slash your manuscript with red lines, or recite grammar rules ad nauseum. They will not force changes. Professional editing will go beyond correcting grammar mistakes. Editors ensure your tone aligns with your audience, suggest alternative words to enhance clarity, and help you communicate your message effectively.
Our Owner and Editor, Jen Jilany, is trained in grammar, structural/substantive and stylistic editing, as well as copyediting, from George Brown College in Toronto. She recently completed an internship as a writer and copyeditor for a Toronto-based online magazine, and has edited everything from PhD applications to historical novels.
She has served on the Executive Committee of Editors Canada since 2023, and is a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association. She also coordinates a partnership between Editors Canada and the Hamilton Public Library called Blue Pencil Writing Consults, which provides authors with professional editing services in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
Literature is her first love. She was reading Little House on the Prairie at the age of six, and had a poem published at the age of eight. She is also a self-published author.
Why Up Style?
Up style is a capitalization style. Within the intricacies of the English language, there are standards ("rules") related to grammar; however, when it comes to style, there is more flexibility (i.e., preference). My background in marketing and advertising trained us to understand how something as simple as the use of capitalization can drive impact by emphasizing key words, and therefore the message we convey. Hence, my business name!
